Doctors and nurses are feeling under increased pressure because of staff shortages.

Hospital chiefs admitted frontline staff were beginning to feel the pinch due to cost-cutting.

The news comes after it was revealed that East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne’s DGH, is spending less than the national average amount of cash on running its services.

Dr David Scott, the trust’s medical director, said at a board meeting on Wednesday there was little room for staff cover if someone was off sick.
