Interview with Melissa Wilson, Dietitian at Coeliac Disease Resource Centre, UK

What is the Coeliac Disease Resource Centre and what services do you offer?

The Coeliac Disease Resource Centre (CDRC) is supported by Glutafin and supports healthcare professionals in the care of people with coeliac disease.  The CDRC provides a wide range of quality resources, ensuring that healthcare professionals are kept up-to-date with the latest developments in coeliac disease and related areas.

What learning modules do you offer?

The CDRC offers a number of learning modules for healthcare professionals. There are a number of learning modules for healthcare professionals such as dietitians and nurses to utilise on different topic areas in coeliac disease. The aim is to further educate healthcare professionals on various topics. The modules include directed-learning activities, reflective practice exercises and a case study to complete in each. Each learning unit has accredited learning hours. A pharmacy education system has also been developed by the CDRC. The aim is to further educate pharmacists and pharmacy assistants on coeliac disease and position them as key contacts for those following a gluten-free diet.

What career options and prospects are available for nursing professionals with the CDRC?

There are no career options or prospects available with the CDRC. The CDRC is designed to help keep healthcare professionals up-to-date with clinical research in the area of coeliac disease. We also aim to support healthcare professionals seeing patients with coeliac disease through provision of learning modules, resources etc.

How best should a nurse attain continuing professional development?

I think that I have probably answered this in the above questions. In future we would hope to perhaps provide more resources for nurses. We also look to attend some nursing events in the UK to speak with practising nurses.
