I’ve listened to seven years of promises that the NHS is improving and that health-care is at the top of the Government’s agenda. But maternity care in Britain has gone to the dogs. Every year thousands of women are being left to give birth terrified and alone in filthy wards. This isn’t just my view - it’s the finding of the biggest ever Healthcare Commission survey into the country’s maternity services, which damns the chronic lack of midwives in the NHS. Yet, shockingly, 1,300 newly qualified midwives can’t get jobs because hospitals are employing cheaper care assistants to save cash - that would be the cash they’re diverting to bean-counters and bureaucrats to meet Government “objectives”.
