The number of nurses moving from Britain to Australia has jumped by 75 per cent in the past three years, figures show.Nursing and Midwifery Council data suggests thousands of nurses are leaving the UK’s National Health Service in search of better pay and working conditions.The figures show more than 10,000 nurses and midwives left Britain to work abroad in 2006-07 and nearly 35,000 nurses have emigrated in the past four years.Royal College of Nursing general secretary Peter Carter warned the British health system was “just a few short years away from a crisis”.“There is every sign that being short-staffed on overstretched wards puts patients at risk, yet an estimated 20,000 nursing posts have been cut in hospitals and surgeries across the country,” he told The Times.
