Half of nurses will not work extended hours despite the Government’s demand for surgeries to open longer, according to a new poll.A survey for Independent Nurse found that 53% would refuse to work Saturdays and 44% would refuse to work weekday evenings or early morning shifts.Almost all nurses (96%) said the Department of Health should have consulted them nationally over plans to extend GP practice opening times. And many said they would only consider extra hours if there was more cash on the table.The demand for GP practices to open an extra three hours a week has resulted in a row between the British Medical Association (BMA) and the Government.While the focus has largely been on GPs, recent figures show that nurses are seeing more patients for appointments in practices.
