The number of students registering to study nursing has become increasingly high in recent years.In 2006, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), for the first time, allowed a non-State run education establishment, the Phuong Nam Economics and Technique Vocational School, to enroll students for two-year nurse training courses. In the first year, the school enrolled over 200 students. Later, in mid November 2007, the Hong Duc Private Nursing and Healthcare Technique opened its first nursing training course, enrolling 600 regular students from 64 provinces and cities nationwide. In 2007, Nguyen Tat Thanh College began providing its first two-year nursing course to 1,000 trainees. The Nam Dinh Nursing University enrolled 1,100 students the previous year, whom were weeded out of 4,000 candidates. The university’s management board said it could not enroll more due to capacity limits. There are now 60 nursing schools, including vocational schools, colleges and universities. State-owned schools can enroll only 200 students a year, which has prompted many students to enroll in private institutions. Read more
