Commenting on the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s decision Thursday to reverse its decision to allow specialist community public health nurses to renew their NMC registration without first renewing their midwifery registration, the Royal College of Midwives Deputy General Secretary has expressed concern about 26 midwives on the SPCHN (Specialist Community Public Health Nurse) who no longer have an effective midwifery registration. RCM Deputy General Secretary Louise Silverton said: “We have met with the NMC to discuss this issue. The NMC will be conducting an impact analysis to see if any of these midwives are currently eligible to resume midwifery practice. If not, the RCM can offer our distance learning return to midwifery practice programme and we will look to employers supporting midwives to do this in a timely manner.” A specialist community public health nurse, who is also registered as a midwife, will now be required to undertake 450 hours as a specialist community public health nurse and 450 hours of practise as a midwife.
